Z21 vs Märklin CS3: open DCC/MM or the mfx ecosystem?

The Z21 runs any DCC brand regardless of manufacturer; the CS3 adds automatic mfx registration for Märklin and Trix locos. Which suits your layout?

Two digital traditions

The black Z21 from Roco/Fleischmann and the Märklin CS3 (art. 60226) or CS3+ (art. 60216) are both solid digital command stations — but they serve different audiences. The Z21 is brand-agnostic: any NMRA DCC loco from Roco, Fleischmann, Piko, Brawa or any other brand runs on it. The CS3 is the heart of the Märklin/Trix ecosystem and adds mfx auto-registration: new locos register themselves automatically and transmit their function descriptions. That feature is unique — but limited to locos with an mfx decoder on a Märklin CS.

If you mainly run 3-rail Märklin locos and want the full Märklin experience, choose the CS3. If you have a mixed fleet from multiple brands or want brand independence, choose the Z21.

Black Z21 — for any DCC decoder, brand-independent

The black Z21 supports DCC (14/28/128 steps) and Motorola MM I/II. No mfx — but that is not a limitation if you use DCC decoders. Any NMRA-compliant decoder, from any brand, runs on the Z21. Feedback via R-BUS (max. 160 blocks), CAN, LocoNet and X-BUS. RailCom cutout present for RailCom decoders. Track current 3 A, voltage 12–24 V.

ModelRailPro connects via UDP port 21105. The Z21 integration is in active use.

Märklin CS3 / CS3+ — the mfx ecosystem

The CS3 (art. 60226) and CS3+ (art. 60216) support mfx, mfx+, DCC and Motorola — but not Selectrix. The distinguishing feature is mfx: new locos register themselves automatically at the CS3 and transmit their name and function descriptions. This makes setting up a new loco on a CS3 considerably easier than on any other command station.

Track current: the CS3 delivers 3 A / 60 W (suitable for HO and N); the CS3+ delivers 5 A / 100 W (also for scale 1 and larger layouts). Maximum 32 functions per loco; accessory addresses: 320 (MM) or 2048 (DCC). The CS3+ has a built-in S88 port; the CS3 itself does not and requires a separate Link S88 (art. 60883). Whether the CS3/CS3+ has LocoNet is to be confirmed on a layout. The CS3+ has a colour touchscreen; the exact size (presumably 7") is to be confirmed on a layout.

ModelRailPro connects via Märklin CAN over the network (UDP 15731 / 15730). The implementation is complete and the status is ready — to be confirmed on a layout.

When to choose which command station?

Choose the CS3 / CS3+ if you:

  • mainly run 3-rail Märklin and Trix locos
  • want mfx auto-registration (no manual address setting)
  • are building a complete layout in the Märklin ecosystem
  • have a larger layout and need 5 A (choose CS3+)

Choose the Z21 (black) if you:

  • run locos from multiple brands (Roco, Fleischmann, Piko…)
  • want to run Motorola locos alongside DCC
  • want to stay brand-independent
  • want R-BUS or LocoNet feedback

Frequently asked questions

Can I run mfx locos with the Z21?
No. No Z21 model supports mfx. For automatic mfx registration you need a Märklin CS2 or CS3. An mfx loco can be fitted with an additional DCC decoder and then run via the Z21.
Does the CS3 also work with DCC locos from other brands?
Yes. The CS3 supports DCC alongside mfx and Motorola. Any NMRA DCC decoder works on a CS3.
Is the CS3 connection in ModelRailPro ready?
The implementation is complete but has not yet been confirmed on a real layout — status "ready, to be confirmed on a layout". See the hardware page for the most current status.
